Format:

20 teams, each plays the others twice - home and away - for a total of 38 games each, over 38 game weeks.



Scoring points:

3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, 0 points for a loss.



Table order:

1. points won; 2. total goal difference; 3. total goals scored; 4. points in head-to-head matches; 5. goal difference in hth matches; 6. away goals in hth matches; 7. total away goals scored; 8. play-off.



Relegation to the league:

2 teams from 2013/2014 2. Bundesliga

1 more team from 2013/2014 2. Bundesliga possible to relegate through Play-offs 2/3



Promotion from the league:

1-2 place: promoted to 2014/2015 2. Bundesliga

3 place: enters Play-offs 2/3 with one 2. Bundesliga team for 1 place in 2014/2015 2. Bundesliga



Relegation from the league:

18-20 place: relegated to 2014/2015 Regionalliga



Promotion to the league:

3 teams from 2013/2014 Regionalliga



Promotion and relegation of II teams:

II teams (Borussia Dortmund II and Stuttgart II) cannot be promoted.

If any of them finishes on a promotion or promotion play-off spot, then the next best team in the final table promotes or enters Play-offs 2/3 instead.

II teams are to be relegated regardless of their league position if their first team gets relegated to 2014/2015 3. Liga.

In such case and if the II team is above the relegation zone, the best placed team in the relegation zone keeps its place in 3. Liga instead.

Karlsruher SC and Arminia Bielefeld promoted to 2. Bundesliga

Darmstadt 98, Babelsberg and Alemannia Aachen relegated to Regionalliga

RB Leipzig, Holstein Kiel and Elversberg promoted from Regionalliga



Changes before the season:

On 29 May 2013 the Deutsche Fußball Liga announced that it won't give a license for the upcoming season to MSV Duisburg, 11th in 2. Bundesliga last season; due to financial instability.

As a result MSV Duisburg is relegated to 3. Liga and Sandhausen, 17th in 2. Bundesliga last season and due to be relegated to 3. Liga; keeps its place in 2. Bundesliga.

On 1 June 2013 the Deutscher Fußball-Bund announced that it won't give a license for the upcoming season to Kickers Offenbach, 15th last season.

As a result, Kickers Offenbach is relegated to Regionalliga and Darmstadt 98, 18th last season and due to be relegated to Regionalliga; keeps its place in 3. Liga.
